old homes are fascinating.....they sure stir the imagination.

Julie Dant replied:

For sure! I've been inside many, many of the old abandoned relics that I feel a compulsion to photograph and I've always only felt peace, or a little nostalgia. Never have I felt a negative emotion. It always crosses my mind to wonder about the families who lived in them, however.. Thanks Dave! ;)

Artist's Description

These once stately and beautiful two story clapboard homes that have sadly been allowed to slowly decay from exposure to the elements are a favorite subject of mine. I always feel a "lingering" when I am near them....of what, I'm not sure, but I suspect it is the residual energy of the families that lived, loved and died within it's walls that surely must stay with the house, no matter how long it has stood empty. This particular home in Illinois was one that I felt it very strongly. When I began to edit the photo..it seemed to take on a life of it's own and this is the result. The 'smokiness, fogginess or mist' was not something I was trying to achieve...it was just 'there' when I stopped working on the image which surprised and pleased me very much! ;0)

About Julie Dant

Julie Dant

All my photographs on FAA are copyright protected and may not be reproduced, copied, or used for any purpose without my express consent. Hello! My name is Julie Riker Dant and I live in the small town of Washington, in southwestern Indiana, in the United States. In the mid to late 90's, I began searching out and documenting with black and white photographs, old abandoned houses all over Indiana, the Midwest, Southeast and Deep South, with the intention of publishing a pictorial book one day. The book has not come to pass as of yet, however I have produced a video in which all of my Indiana houses are featured accompanied by beautiful Celtic music. It is entitled SOLEMN RELICS. In the process of searching out the old houses on...
